A PNG to ICO converter that creates a proper icon file

A Windows icon is more than a picture with a different filename. ICO is a container that can hold several sizes of the same artwork, allowing an application to choose the image appropriate for a small menu or a larger shortcut. This PNG to ICO converter packages three useful sizes into one downloadable file: 16 by 16, 32 by 32 and 48 by 48 pixels.

Start with a PNG containing your own logo, symbol or other artwork. The icon converter resizes it on your device and generates the ICO directory and bitmap data. It does not simply rename the PNG extension. You receive a genuine multi-size icon that can be used where Windows or another application specifically asks for an .ico file.

Square artwork is usually the easiest starting point. A rectangular PNG is fitted inside each square icon size without stretching, with transparent space around it. Existing transparent areas remain transparent. Very detailed photos and small lettering can become difficult to recognize at sixteen pixels, so inspect your design at a small size before relying on it.

Conversion does not redraw your logo, sharpen a blurry source or invent missing detail. Smaller artwork may be enlarged, but that cannot create a higher-resolution original. A clear PNG with a simple silhouette generally produces a more readable icon than a busy composition. The process stays in your browser, with no image upload or account needed.

How to convert PNG to ICO online

  1. 1

Choose one PNG image or drop it into the file area. Use artwork you own or have permission to adapt into an icon.

  2. 2

Wait for the browser to resize the PNG and assemble the three-size icon. The source preview appears beside the output information.

  3. 3

Check that the output lists 16 × 16, 32 × 32 and 48 × 48. Those images are stored together inside one ICO file, not delivered as separate PNG downloads.

  4. 4

Download the ICO and select it in the application or Windows shortcut settings that need an icon. Check the displayed result at both small and larger sizes.

What this icon converter includes

Three embedded sizes

The output contains sixteen, thirty-two and forty-eight pixel variants. Software that reads ICO files can choose an appropriate embedded size instead of scaling a single image every time.

Real ICO structure

The converter writes an icon directory and separate 32-bit bitmap entries with transparency masks. Changing an extension alone would not create these required file structures.

Transparency preserved

Transparent PNG pixels remain transparent in the generated icon. This helps a symbol sit cleanly against different desktop backgrounds without an unwanted rectangular border.

Proportions maintained

Rectangular artwork is centered and fitted within a square canvas. The image is not stretched to fill the square, avoiding a distorted logo or uneven symbol.

Browser-only conversion

Canvas performs the resizing and the icon is assembled locally. You can download it without registering, uploading artwork or installing a separate image conversion program.

Common reasons to make an ICO file

  • Give a personal Windows shortcut a recognizable icon based on your own artwork.
  • Prepare a small multi-size icon for a desktop project that accepts the ICO format.
  • Create an ICO favicon asset for a website alongside any other formats your site needs.
  • Standardize simple PNG symbols into icon files for an internal desktop toolkit.

Frequently asked questions

Does renaming PNG to ICO work?

No. A genuine ICO has a directory and embedded image entries. This converter writes those structures, so the output is an icon file rather than a PNG with a misleading extension.

Which icon sizes are included?

Every result includes 16 × 16, 32 × 32 and 48 × 48 images in one ICO. This tool does not add a 256-pixel variant or offer custom size selection.

Can I use a transparent PNG?

Yes. The converter retains transparency when resizing the artwork and writes transparency information into each icon entry. A transparent source is useful for logos and simple symbols.

Will a rectangular image be stretched?

No. It is resized proportionally and centered inside the square icon sizes. Unfilled space is transparent, so a wide or tall image may appear smaller than a square design.

Can I upload JPG instead of PNG?

This tool accepts PNG only. Convert your JPG to PNG first with the JPG to PNG tool, then make the icon. That conversion will not remove the original JPG background.
