How Do I Combine PDF Files?
How do I combine PDF files when I need to send just one document? Join the existing PDFs in reading order, without printing, scanning again or pasting screenshots into a new document.
Learn how to use FileSimplifier on a computer or phone, including when your starting files are photographs rather than PDFs. Combine PDF is free, requires no signup and processes documents in your browser. Keep your originals for later changes.
What combining PDF files means
Combining PDF files means joining the pages of two or more existing documents into one PDF. Merging is another name for the same task. For example, a cover letter, résumé and reference sheet can become a single application document. Each source contributes its pages in sequence; the originals remain unchanged on your device.
Combining does not rewrite the words on a page or turn scans into searchable text. FileSimplifier copies the original pages rather than converting them into pictures. Selectable text and vector graphics remain in the page content, while an image-only scan stays image-only. Review the finished document instead of assuming that every source file had the same page size or orientation.
Method 1 — Use our free Combine PDF tool
Start with the PDFs you want to include and decide which document should come first. If a file needs a password to open, remove that protection in an authorized PDF application before using this tool. FileSimplifier cannot unlock encrypted documents. Close unnecessary browser tabs when working with large files to leave more memory available.
- Open the Combine PDF tool and choose your PDF files from the file picker, or drag them onto the selection area on a computer. Add at least two documents for a combined result.
- Check the filenames and page counts in the list. Remove anything you added by mistake. The list shows the sequence of whole documents, not a selection of individual pages.
- Drag the file rows into order or use the arrow buttons. Put a cover sheet first, followed by the main document and supporting material. All pages from each file stay together.
- Press Merge PDF and keep the tab open while the browser creates the combined document. Your PDFs are read and joined on your device rather than uploaded to a processing server.
- Download the result and open it in a PDF reader. Check the first and last pages, the transitions between documents and the total page count before sending or filing the download.
Method 2 — Combine PDFs on your phone
Open FileSimplifier in a current mobile browser and visit Combine PDF. Tap Choose Files, then select documents from the locations offered by your phone. On iPhone, PDFs are often saved in Files; on Android, they may be in Downloads or another document folder. The picker and selection options vary by browser and operating system.
If your picker allows several selections, choose the PDFs together. Otherwise, add documents using the file controls until the list contains everything you need. Use the arrow buttons to arrange the rows; they are easier to control than dragging on a small screen. Check filenames carefully when similarly named versions appear next to each other.
Tap Merge PDF, wait for processing and download the combined file. Find it in your browser downloads or the location your phone offers when saving. Keep the browser tab active until the result is ready. Large documents depend on available device memory, so try a smaller group if your phone cannot finish the full batch.
Method 3 — Combine images into a PDF
If your pages are JPG photographs, PNG screenshots or WebP images, use JPG to PDF first. A PDF joining tool expects existing PDFs, not loose pictures. JPG to PDF places several supported images into one document, with one picture per page. Arrange the image rows in reading order before choosing the page layout.
Choose A4 or Letter for consistent paper dimensions, or fit-to-image when pages should follow the pictures. Select the orientation, create the PDF and inspect the download. Blurry text in a photograph will still be blurry, and photographed words do not become searchable because they are inside a PDF. Retake unclear scans before conversion if possible.
When you also have existing PDFs, create the image document first and then add it alongside those PDFs in Combine PDF. This lets a set of scanned receipts follow a typed summary, for example, without manually rebuilding the existing document.
Tips for page order, file size and privacy
Plan the reading order before merging. For individual pages from a longer document, use Extract PDF Pages first, then combine the extracted PDF with your other documents. Use PDF Editor if a source needs page rotation or reordering. Combining whole files alone does not remove unwanted pages or fix sideways scans.
Combining is not compression, so the final file may still be too large for an attachment limit. Check its actual size against the receiving service's requirements. Compress PDF can rebuild pages as images when you need a smaller version, but that removes selectable text and does not guarantee a size reduction.
No signup is needed for these tools. File processing stays in the browser, but your downloaded document is still a file you must handle carefully. Review private information before sharing, retain the originals and delete unwanted copies from your own device when appropriate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I combine PDF files for free?
Open Combine PDF, select your documents, arrange the file rows and press Merge PDF. Download the combined document and check its page order. No account or payment is required.
Can I combine PDF files on my phone?
Yes. Use a modern phone browser, select PDFs through the file picker and reorder them with the arrow buttons. Keep the tab open during processing and save the finished download.
Are my PDFs uploaded when I combine them?
No. FileSimplifier reads and combines the PDF pages inside your browser. Your selected documents are not uploaded to a processing server.
Can I combine JPG images with existing PDFs?
Convert the images into a PDF with JPG to PDF first. Then add that document and your existing PDFs to Combine PDF and arrange the files in the required sequence.
Will combining PDFs make the file smaller?
Not necessarily. Combining joins pages rather than compressing them. Check the downloaded size; if compression is needed, remember that our compressor turns pages into images and removes selectable text.
